The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) stands in solidarity with persons with disabilities (PWDs) as we commemorate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. This day, celebrated annually on 03rd December, serves as a vital reminder of the invaluable contributions that PWDs make to our communities and societies.
Celebrating under this year’s theme “Amplifying the leadership of Disabled People for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”, ACDHRS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to promoting the rights and well-being of PWD at every level of society and development while advocating for their full inclusion in all aspects of life. We recognize that despite the progress made to integrate them, many individuals with disabilities continue to face significant barriers, including discrimination, lack of access to essential services, and inadequate representation in decision-making processes.
We urge governments, civil society organizations, and communities to take concrete actions to dismantle these barriers. This includes enforcing laws that protect the rights of PWDs and ensuring compliance with international frameworks such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Promoting awareness campaigns that depict the situation of PWDs in all aspects of life; challenge stereotypes and foster understanding of the capabilities and contributions of PWDs is essential, as is ensuring that public spaces, transportation, and digital platforms are accessible to all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
On this significant day, we celebrate the resilience and achievements of people with disabilities who continue to advocate for their rights and contribute positively to society. Their voices are crucial in shaping policies that affect their lives, and we encourage all stakeholders to listen to and engage with them constructively.
As we reflect on the importance of inclusivity, let us work together to create a world where every person, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive. Indeed, no one should be left behind! ACDHRS, in consonance with its mandate, remains dedicated to this mission and will continue to support initiatives that empower PWDs across Africa.
