Press release
Banjul, The Gambia – The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), in collaboration with the Ford Foundation West Africa, is excited to announce a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering religious and traditional leaders across Africa to engage effectively with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. This consultation and training program will be held from October 10 to 12, 2024, in Banjul.
The theme of the program, “From Traditional to Transformative: Empowering Religious and Traditional Leaders in Africa for the Consolidation of Democracy, Rule of Law, and Human Rights,” highlights the vital role these leaders can play in today’s world. Traditionally, they have served as guardians of cultural values and moral guidance. With the right training, they can transition from these roles to become advocates for democracy, the rule of law, and human rights within their communities.
The initiative will facilitate dialogue and engagement among religious and traditional leaders on pressing issues such as conflict, military coups, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and human rights violations. These discussions will explore how leaders can promote democracy, support the rule of law, and contribute to peaceful societies.
Additionally, the program will focus on training and capacity building, equipping leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to protect human rights in their communities. By introducing participants to the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and encouraging their active involvement, the program aims to enhance their ability to advocate for justice and equality.
A key component of the program will be the establishment of a network of religious and traditional leaders committed to human rights advocacy. This network will foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, enabling leaders from various regions to tackle common challenges and support one another in promoting peace and justice.
The program will also develop engagement strategies to help leaders interact effectively with governments, civil society, and international organizations. These strategies will empower them to influence policies that align with human rights standards.
Finally, the event will encourage active participation in democratic processes and the rule of law. By empowering religious and traditional leaders to engage in these critical areas, the program aims to foster a stronger culture of accountability and governance across Africa.
We anticipate the participation of 30 to 50 leaders from diverse African communities, regardless of their religious or traditional affiliations. Participants can expect an interactive and enriching program designed to promote collaboration and advocacy.
