The NGO Forum, held from October 13 to 15, 2024, at the International Conference Centre in Banjul, The Gambia, focused on the theme “πβπ ππππ ππ πΈππ’πππ‘πππ: πΈππ’πππ‘π ππ π΄ππππππ πΉππ‘ πππ π‘βπ 21π π‘ πΆπππ‘π’ππ¦,” emphasizing the urgent need for resilient education systems across Africa. Organized by the Africa Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), the forum brought together civil society members, NGOs, religious leaders, and human rights defenders to address challenges posed by conflicts and political instability affecting educational access.
The forum commenced with remarks from Madam Hannah Forster, Executive Director of ACDHRS, who underscored the importance of collaboration between NGOs and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. She emphasized the Centre’s commitment to promoting human rights as outlined in the African Charter. Notable speakers included Dawda Jallow, Gambia’s Minister of Justice, who highlighted women’s evolving roles and the need for accessible education. He addressed issues such as climate change and gender-based violence. Remy Ngoy Lumbu, Chairperson of the African Commission, called for education on democratic values in schools to prepare future leaders.
The forum featured several panels addressing human rights situations across different African regions. Discussions included challenges like political instability and human rights abuses in Central Africa, severe repression of human rights defenders in Eastern Africa, shrinking civic space in North Africa, and increasing violence in West Africa. The event concluded with actionable recommendations aimed at improving educational access and protecting human rights.
These outcomes will be presented at the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, scheduled from October 17 to November 6, 2024, in Banjul. The event marks a significant step towards addressing educational challenges and promoting human rights across the continent.
