Banjul, The Gambia – Recognizing the urgent need for collective action to address environmental degradation and climate change in Africa, the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) with funding from Ford Foundation is collaborating with Open Society Foundation –Africa (OSF) to organize a three-day training on regional and international environmental protection and climate change mechanisms.
The training is scheduled at the Metzy Resort Hotel from 28-30 August 2024 with the theme: From Environmental Conservation to Climate Action: Empowering Civil Society Organizations in Africa for Sustainable Development and Human Rights Advancement.
This training aims to empower civil society actors and organizations as key agents of change in addressing environmental challenges and advancing climate resilience in Africa. By enhancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and promoting innovative solutions, the event seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future for the continent
The important capacity building will be attended by 12 stakeholder participants from various sectors of civil society actors and organizations working on environmental protection and climate change from diverse African communities.
Objective: To equip CSOs working on environment and climate change in Africa with knowledge and skills to enhance the protection of human rights through engagement with international and regional human rights mechanisms; to introduce participants to the functions and procedures of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights; and to inspire participants to actively participate in the activities of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, particularly regarding environmental and climate-related issues.
Among the objectives also include to explore the unique roles that CSOs can play in promoting democracy, upholding the rule of law, and advocating for environmental justice and sustainable development; to facilitate dialogue and the exchange of experiences among CSOs from diverse backgrounds in The Gambia; and to establish a network of CSOs dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights about environmental and climate issues in Africa.
Expected Outcomes: For the participants to better understand regional and international environmental protection and climate change mechanisms, strengthen their capacity to advocate for environmental sustainability and climate resilience, and establish networks for collaboration and collective action.
